Stage 10 of the JOGT: Dunbeath to Lybster
Distance 7.9miles/12.6 km
For further details see jogt.org.uk/stages/
This stage passes through Latheron where there was a carved cross and a chapel near the shore dedicated to St Ciaran (d.617/8). Ciaran was a follower of Donan and was one of the Eigg martyrs. He founded chapels and burial grounds at Strathmore and Dalnawillan. The Daldawillan site is close to the upper reaches of the Thurso River, near where the Glutt and Rumsdale Rivers join it. He is also associated with the site at Rangag, on the A9 soon after it turns inland to Thurso, where the remains of a broch or castle can be seen from the road.

Lybster had a chapel at the harbour dedicated to Mary. Dedications to Mary, the mother of Jesus, multiplied after the 12th century, sometimes replacing older ones.
