Stage 14 of the JOGT: Keiss to John o Groats

Distance 13.6 miles/22.1 km

For further details see jogt.co.uk/stages/

This stage passes through Freswick, where Freswick House and mausoleum can be seen from a lay-bye at the side of the road. The mausoleum is on the site of an ancient chapel dedicated to Saint Modan, a companion of Fergus of Wick. Devotional practices linked to St Modan’s chapel continued into the 19th century despite the efforts of local ministers to suppress them.

Modan was a common family name of the Earls of Caithness in the 11th century.

As you approach John O Groats itself, you will pass the site of St Mary's chapel just above the shore. For further details go to visitjohnogroats.com

So ends the John O Groat Trail. To complete Braid 3 of the Northern Pilgrims' Way, follow the coast westwards through Canisbay to Gills Bay – apr 4 miles/6.4 km. At the moment, there is not a signposted path but the route can easily be navigated using a mixture of shoreline and roadside walking. The present church at Canisbay is on the site of a church dedicated to Drostan. For details of several other sites in Caithness dedicated to Drostan, go to www.wickstferguschurch.org.uk/page16.html
