An A5, 42-page booklet giving walking instructions for the route. Amendments to the first edition:

p.21 as delivery lorries and campervans increase in number, we have revised our instructions about crossing the Ousdale Burn. Your choice of route will depend on personal preference and experience. Here is the opinion of an experienced walker, dated Sept 2023.

I consider the steps to be very good as long as care is taken.

It is very steep and there is quite a long, mostly sheer, drop, a couple of feet off the path on the right hand side. There are very few steps that are over 12'' high but two or 3 are between 18'' and 24'' and extreme care is needed on these. There are also a few that have quite a short tread and on these it is very important not to step on the wood that holds the steps. As you might expect, the wood is very, very slippery!

To sum up: the slope is very steep; the steps are well made; extreme care must be taken.

It is a challenge.

I would feel fine about doing it again. Would I prefer to have a 40-tonne lorry passing by at 50-60 mph,1m from me on the A9?  No. Absolutely not.
